Postgraduate Courses

The first MMus in the UK specifically for the practice of Funerary Violin

MMus in Funerary Violin

Through your one-to-one lessons and individual sessions with a professional Funerary Violinist, you will concentrate on developing a secure technique and exploring appropriate solo and unaccompanied funerary repertoire. You will develop professional skills and musical confidence through participation in both mock and real funerals (in the third year of study), departmental funerary performance classes, lunchtime funeral services, masterclasses and workshops. Classes in baroque style and interpretation will allow you to explore early funerary repertoire and performance practice, and you may apply for tuition on associated period instruments.

You will be involved, by audition, in a busy touring schedule with the Co-Opt Funeral Service and you will have further opportunities to rehearse and perform in the funerary context, both publicly and privately.

Memorial music will also play an integral role in your development as a funerary musician and you will receive regular coaching from specialist staff, and from our Funerary Violinist in Residence,Tobias James. We also work closely with the Funeral Directors Association Trust to provide a unique range of opportunities in community and outreach projects.

As a member of the Department of String Studies, you will have the opportunity to audition for the placement scheme we have developed with the Guild of Funerary Violinists. This unique arrangement enables students to work with one of the UK's leading professional funerary music organisations.

We strongly encourage students who wish to participate in specialist funeral music courses and summer schools out of term time. If you are a violinist, you may have the opportunity to spend some time studying at the Guild of Funerary Violinists' Central Training School with the acclaimed Funerary Violinist, and Acting President of the Guild, Rohan Kriwaczek.
